For Them What Care

A joke circulating at the moment has Kofi Annan asking Colin Powell "How do you know Iraq has weapons of mass destruction?" to which Powell replies, straightfaced: "We kept the receipts."

Yes the U.S. has a part in arming the man and yes it is a bit like giving a 14 year old a computer and then acting shocked when you discover he was using it to surf porn. But just because you made a mistake in the past doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't take steps to correct it. I'm sure the parents of those killed in the Oklahoma City bombing wish that Timothy McVeigh's father would have spent a little less time "sparing the rod."

Dealing with Iraq is like teaching your son to use the potty. He stands there crying "don't look" to which I forced to reply, "Hey, I'm just here to ensure you hit the bowl." Difference is, if he fails I'm not going to shove his head in the bowl. Yeah I just compared this current international crisis to a parent/child relationship. It's still tough love, just tougher than a parent ever wants to be.

Sigh, one can only hope that reports from Iraqi deserters from the front line are correct when the say that a lot of the forces plan to immediately surrender or, indeed, take up arms to liberate Iraq. Hey, why not? It worked in Afghanistan.

Anyway, for them what care...
