After much soul searching, I have determined
that high progressive taxes are a good and equitable thing that all facets of
our life could benefit from. You doubt me? Well, let's take a look at my new
concept of a Peer TaxTM. If we were to take the Known World of the SCA and break it down into demographic areas that was juxtaposed with a corresponding income classification, it might look something like this: Now, it is my opinion that the separation between those that are Well Recognized and The Ignored has been growing over the years. I, in fact, applaud Their Royal Majesties' efforts to increase the size of our middle class by reclassifying a percentage of our population from Under Recognized to Better Recognized. This is an excellent start (this much at least I'm serious about, read on) but we need to move further. I would point out in this effort, The Ignored "get nothing and they'll like it." To that end, I recommend the following items: All
these items are fair and even handed way of approaching obvious problems that have existed for some time within the SCA. I'm not sure how we handle all those individuals who over the years have accumulated a wealth of recognition in excess of 2 and sometimes even 3 to 4 peerages. These are indeed greedy people who claim love of service and love of learning as their motivation but we know the truth...they're greedy! What about the transient
nature of these various demographics? What about how every "newbie" finds
him/herself moving through these different classifications? What about those who are content to show up for events, do no work, and live their lives receiving no recognition? What about those Well Recognized and Stupidly Well Recognized parents who install the drive, desire, and love of service in their children who then turn around an earn recognition on their own merits? Doesn't matter. What we are attempting to do is reach an equality of outcome. To level the playing field in such a way as to ensure no one could use experience to their advantage. Those arguments just show both your greedy nature and your blatant disregard for those needing recognition the most. You shouldn't be giving them a hand up (by taking squires, apprentices, and protges) as that takes too long. You should be giving them a hand out (do the work but let someone else take credit). Anyway, for them what care...where is my Curia? (Tongue being removed from cheek now. Sometimes the best way for demonstrating the absurd, is by being
absurd)
